Looking at the ADEM Program, Efforts to Equalize Education for the People of Papua
Equal access to education in the Merdeka Belajar Program has become a government priority, especially in Papua and West Papua. Therefore, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology has launched the Affirmative Education Scholarship Program (ADEM).
According to Indonesia.go.id, 443 students from Papua and West Papua who participated in the ADEM program during the 2021 cohort returned to their respective regions on June 10, 2024. Over the course of three years, these 443 students have studied across six provinces in Indonesia, namely West Java, Banten, Central Java, the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY), East Java, and Bali.
The Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, Nadiem Makarim, who sent off the students, hopes that the knowledge gained from various regions can be utilized effectively, ultimately bringing about change in their areas.
“Currently, there are many initiatives from the Ministry to encourage students to continue their education at quality higher education institutions, such as through the Indonesia Maju Scholarship, LPDP, KIP College, ADik, and others,” he stated.
Graduating Thousands of Students
The Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology has graduated a total of 6,817 high school and vocational school students through the ADEM program, including those from Papua and West Papua, special regions, or 3T (disadvantaged, frontier, and outermost regions), as well as repatriated children in Malaysia.
Gabriela Joanne Iriani Ondi, an ADEM scholarship alumna from Nabire, Central Papua, stated that the ADEM program allowed her to experience a decent education similar to that of children outside the Papua region.
“I have learned so many new things that I can apply when I return home. I gained new knowledge, both educational and non-educational. Therefore, when I come back to Papua, I can implement those positive aspects in my province,” she explained.
A similar sentiment was expressed by Everth Ayandiso Mirino, a student from Sorong, West Papua, who studies at SMKN 1 Kragilan in Banten. He is grateful to have participated in the ADEM program organized by the government.
“The friends at SMKN 1 Kragilan, Banten, are very friendly and kind.”
Hoping for Impact
Andika Ganendra, Head of the Educational Financing Services Center (Puslapdik), announced that in 2024, approximately 1,200 students will participate in the ADEM program, with 500 of them coming from Papua.
