MRP: Cagub Harus Gandeng Cawagub Papua Barat Daya Orang Asli Papua

MRP: The Deputy Governor Must Collaborate with the Deputy Governor of Southwest Papua who is an Indigenous Papuan

In the realm of regional head elections in Southwest Papua Province, the political landscape is evolving rapidly, particularly in the upcoming Governor and Deputy Governor races. As a province that has been shaped by the Special Autonomy Law, candidates for these positions must hail from the indigenous Papuan community. This requirement is not only a legal mandate but also a reflection of the region’s unique cultural and historical context.

Moreover, Southwest Papua Province is one of the provinces that was fought for by Special Autonomy Law (Otsus) Number 21 of 2001, amendment to Law Number 2 of 2021. The call for indigenous representation extends beyond just the Governor position – even candidates for Deputy Governor must be native Papuans. This insistence on inclusivity and diversity is a testament to the values of the Papuan people and their desire to see their voices reflected in the highest levels of government.

Responding to this, Deputy Chair II of the Papuan People’s Council of Southwest Papua Province (MRP-PBD), Vincentius Paulinus Baru, ST., M.URP emphasized that candidates for governor who come from indigenous children in Southwest Papua Province must accompany the deputy governor indigenous Papuans (OAP). This is in accordance with the mandate of the Special Autonomy Law (Otsus) in Papua.

The chairman of the Tambrauw Traditional Community Institution (LEMATA) asked every candidate for governor in Southwest Papua Province to properly check and select candidates for deputy governor who are native Papuans (OAP), before joining them in the regional elections for governor and deputy governor.

Paulinus further said that his party at MRP-PBD is very consistent with the aspirations of the Papuan people in Southwest Papua Province, namely that those who have the right to run as Governor and Deputy Governor of Southwest Papua Province are native Papuans (OAP).

The Special Autonomy Law states that native Papuans are people who come from the Melanesian racial group which consists of native tribes in Papua Province and/or people who are accepted and recognized as native Papuans by the Papuan people.

Paulinus asked the gubernatorial candidates and deputy gubernatorial candidates for Southwest Papua Province not to be afraid to take representatives from indigenous Papuans (OAP). Because this is a mandate of the Special Autonomy Law which must be carried out. Paulinis is confident that the 33 MRPs in Southwest Papua are ready to safeguard the interests of indigenous Papuans (OAP).
